      The Bachelor of Economics programme is designed to provide solid grounding in theory and economic knowledge and improve the critical and analytical skills of students. The core and elective courses are shaped to produce graduates with broad based as well as specialised knowledge. Beginning in 2021, the newly introduced specialization system provides students the option to specialise in one of five (5) areas, namely;

    • A total of 126 credits are required to complete the Bachelor of Economics programme as follows;

      c. Specialisation Elective:

      It is compulsory for students to specialise in one of five areas as below:

      1. 1. Applied Economics
      2. 2. Financial Economics
      3. 3. Development Studies
      4. 4. Applied Statistics and Analytics
      5. 5. Public Administration

      d. Faculty Elective:

      Students may choose four elective courses from any of the faculty elective courses offered.


      e. University Elective: Student Holistic Empowerment (SHE)

      Total 126

      A student will graduate with a specialization after he/she has completed the programme requirements and fulfilled a minimum of 7 courses (21 credits) from a particular specialisation.

    • The academic programme follows the semester system and commences in October (Semester I) and March (Semester II). The minimum period of study is 7 semesters and the maximum period of study is 11 semesters.

    • Malaysian Candidates

      Fulfill the University general requirements as well as the programme specific requirements in order to be admitted to the programme. Potential candidates must possess or complete any of the following:

        • STPM qualification or its equivalent with CGPA 3.30 and above; or

        • Diploma in economics and administration and other related fields with CGPA 3.30 and above from any institution recognised by the Malaysian Government and approved by the University Senate; or

        • Matriculation, Foundation or Malaysian Sports School Pre-University Certificate with CGPA 3.30 and above; or

        • A-Level, IB, AUSMAT; and

        • Obtained at least Grade B+ in SPM Level Mathematics; and

        • Obtained at least Band 3 in MUET

      Non-Malaysian Candidates

      A candidate who is Non-Malaysian citizen and who wishes to pursue a programme of study at the University of Malaya must possess and passed at least 12 years education and fulfil the following conditions:

      1. Passed with at least grade B in the relevant subject at the A-Level/equivalent; or

      2. Obtained a CGPA of at least 3.30 in the relevant subject at diploma level and approved by the University; and

      3. Passed the English Language Requirements. Effective from February 2019 Intake, exemption will be given to candidates who obtain one of the following:

        • Band of 5.0 and above in IELTS (Academic); or

        • Score of 500 (PBT), 173 (CBT) or 60 (IBT) and above in TOEFL; or

        • Band of 3 and above in Malaysian University English Test (MUET); or

        • Score 41 and above in Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE Academic); or

        • At least Grade C in English for General Certificate of Education (A Level), University of Cambridge; or

        • At least Grade C in English for General Certificate of Secondary Education (O Level), University of Cambridge; or

        • At least Grade C in Cambridge Assessment English: First (FCE)

    • Malaysian Candidates
